• You must present ideas with supporting arguments, or reasons; 0 marks for purely descriptive portfolios.
  • Relevant examples means using supporting research/sources apart from the news item. Make sure you stay within the AREA of IMPACT.
  • Four quality citations is a reasonable expectation for 2 marks as the bibliography requires a minimum of 4 references. Wikipedia may not be considered quality - see below.
  • Coherently means the same issue/s are developed from Criterion A to D. Weaker students often change issues/scenarios from those presented in Criterion A. STICK TO YOUR AREA OF IMACT
  • Extended relevant examples means a significant number of sources/examples are used.
  • The number of resources cited to be classified as extended should be approximately 8 - 10 spread across all criteria. This would mean that most of the main ideas in all the criteria would have some support.
  • A must include the news item and possibly 1 more
  • B should have 2 - 3 sources to fully explain the IT Background
  • C should have 4 sources
  • D should have 1 - 2
  • The same sources can be used more than once.
  • Make sure that the sources you use are not too old - for example, anything before 2005-6 may not be relevant today.
  • Avoid quotes - Quality examples are required, not quotes that are mainly substitutes for the students own wording.


Is your news item dated after February 2009?
Have you clearly identified an AREA OF IMPACT?
Have you ensured that all of your examples are in the CONTEXT of the AREA OF IMPACT (very important for Criterion F).

Advice on the use of Wikipedia for Portfolios

Wikipedia should not be used as the sole source, but could be included in a wide range of sources chosen by the student.

The Principal Moderator of Portfolio gives the following advice:

"The question about Wikipedia is not that it is good or bad in itself but "How appropriate is it for using in the Portfolio?"

[Earlier] comments resulted from students using Wikipedia as the major source for the impacts of the issue in Criterion C, rather than finding examples, explanations, statistics, etc from other sources that are directly associated with the issue and hopefully in a real context. These days the use of Wikipedia is declining and is used more judiciously as teachers train their students better in the researching of IT issues from a broad range of sources and contexts.

For the type of research needed for the Portfolio I cannot see a major role for Wikipedia as being a source for the impacts for Criterion C. For example: the Wikipedia section on Telecommuting is a good comprehensive overview and I might use some of it in class but it really contains far too much information to be digested by the student and far too much to be useful for the Portfolio. For Criterion C the student should go to the references at the bottom for examples and explanations that are in a real context and are focused on the aspects that the students are investigating.

However I would not look badly on the use of Wikipedia for factual material that is used in Criterion B. Wikipedia is usually reliable for this type of material. Material from encyclopeida type sources such as www.howstuffworks.com is often used in Criterion B with good effect.

The May 06 report only says not to use Wikipedia as as major source, but does not preclude its use for other purposes such as definitions, general explanations, background and factual material. The best Criterion Cs have research that is in a real-context and focused on an aspect of the IT issue the student is researching. Also a variety of research sources about various aspects of the impact of the IT enables the students to do an effective analysis."
